KDHE Waste Tire Product Grants

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) awards annual Waste Tire Product Grants funded by the state's tire excise tax. These grants are awarded to local units of government and K-12 public and private schools for projects that use recycled tire products like playground surfacing.

What to know

  • Kansas local units of government and K-12 public and private schools may apply.
  • Eligible projects must be no less than 50% waste tire material by weight, unless composed of other recycled material.
  • The program provides up to 50% matching funds to awarded applicants.
  • Grants are funded by the tire excise tax; the most recent cycle awarded roughly $494,000 across 30 recipients statewide, with single awards up to $40,000.
  • Recent application windows have opened in mid-November and closed mid-January.

How we help

Kansas is one of the most straightforward tire-grant fits in the region. Our IPEMA-certified mulch is well over the 50% recycled-tire threshold. We'll send a delivered quote and a product spec sheet sized to your playground so your application and board packet are ready to go.

Why rubber mulch for playgrounds

IPEMA-certified rubber mulch provides consistent fall-height protection, doesn't compact or decompose like wood fiber, won't blow or float away as easily, and doesn't need yearly topping off. For schools, parks and daycares it means a safer surface and far less maintenance over its life — which is exactly why state tire programs encourage it as a recycled-tire end use.

What we deliver

Unpainted black chunk-nugget rubber mulch in 2,000-lb supersacks, delivered to your site on the truck and set down for unloading with bucket forks, a forklift, or rented equipment. Need a specific color or depth spec for an application? Tell us and we'll put it in writing on your quote.
